A Day at the Beach – Picnic Food Ideas

We love love love going to the beach/pool/lakeside but we always have a hard time finding healthy and satisfying foods to soothe our hunger. This is partly a result of not planning ahead (last-minute day off :)), partly the tempting but very unhealthy beach food we have here in Hungary. The repertoire of mainly all water-side food stands is exactly the same: fried stuff garnished with fried stuff, hamburgers, hotdogs, fried garlic bread  – yum – and little more. Many reasons to plan your food ahead and you will not feel totally guilty about the things you have consumed all day and you won’t have to  stand in line for all that bad-for-you stuff. Also – not only for day at the beach – there are many things you don’t even need a freezer box for! Be creative 🙂

So.. this is just an example of what we took to the beach the other day (for 2 persons) – we only had to buy an ice cream apart from what we had with us 😉 Also, all of this fits in a normal sized travel freezer box.

For Breakfast (in the car):

We had sandwiches made of leftover meatballs, sprinkled with some mustard and wrapped tight in plastic foil.

For post-breakfast:

We had home-made trail mix, with only our favourites: peanuts, raisins, almonds and dried red cranberries

For lunch:

We had a made-ahead Nizza Salad, with 2 boiled eggs and round toasts wrapped separately in aluminum foil (with plastic forks of course)

For afternoon snack:

Honeydew melon, cut into bite sized pieces and bundt cake pieces from the previous day, all stored in tightly closed plastic containers.

The drinks: 2 big bottles, 1 water and 1 home-made fruit tea, popped into the freezer for the night before the trip, thus they maintained nice and cold well into the afternoon!

Enjoy the the summertime dear readers!!!

  1. Now that’s doing it up right! Soon, off to Cape Cod & I can’t wait.

These are some great ideas! Just this week my boyfriend and I were talking about how we need to start packing lunches for our day trips; it can be so hard to find a nice quick, healthy, affordable meal when you’re out and about.
