Sweet Temptation: Churros from Barcelona, Spain

It is that time of the year again, right? When you can indulge without remorse – we are allowed to devour all the Christmas cookies that we can and sit back with a big mug of cinnamon hot chocolate topped with cream and chocolate sprinkles…
So why not enjoy a batch of Catalonian Churros with a cup of outrageously dense and delicious hot chocolate (or as the locals call it: Xurros amb Xocolata), like we did on our recent trip to Spain – sitting on the terrasse of the (in my opinion) best churreria in Barcelona, we started the celebrations early 🙂
Even the sun appeared for some minutes to allow us to snap a few nice pictures!
And if You cannot travel to Barcelona on such a short notice to grab a batch of these, don’t worry, You can also do it at home:
Ingredients (for about 10 pieces)
For the churros:
1/2 cup sugar
, 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
, 1 cup water
, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 cup all-purpose flour
vegetable oil for frying
For the chocolate sauce:
100g dark chocolate, chopped
, 1/2 cup heavy cream
You will need a pastry bag for this operation 🙂
Preparation
For the churros:
Combine 1/2 cup sugar with the cinnamon and set aside. In a small saucepan over medium heat mix the water, 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar, salt and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Bring to a boil then remove from the heat. Stir in the flour and mix until it forms a ball.
Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot. Fill your pastry bag with the dough that you have previously fitted with a large star tip. Squeeze about 10cm long snakes of the dough into the oil, cutting with the help of a knife or a pair of scissors. Fry them until they’re golden. Remove the churros from the oil and drain before rolling them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
For the chocolate sauce:
Warm the cream and pour it over the chopped chocolate, mix until smooth.
Serve with the churros while still warm 🙂

Oh my gosh I am suffering now…who needs some lousy cookies when you could have churros!! Ahhh…yummy!! 🙂
Thank you Bonnie! Oh we will have enough “lousy” cookies as well this Christmas 😀 Happy Holidays!!
Homemade churros dipped in chocolate. It doesn’t get much better than this!
I tend to agree with that 🙂
Oh you have definitely caught my attention with these. They look fabulous as does the hot chocolate. I’m thinking the recipe looks pretty straightforward and this is something I’m going to have to try. My daughter will go crazy if she finds out I can make them
Just another reason she will think you are the best mother on earth! 😀 Merry Christmas Diane!
