Home Baked Hot Dogs

I was thinking the other day that every dish has a story – short or long, funny or sad, big or irrelevant, but still a story. Now these hot dogs have a short one, we usually had some similar to these dogs in a nearby bakery for second breakfast or afternoon snack, however after a while they started to have some issues, they were not fresh enough or the dough went soggy, so we decided it might not be so difficult after all to make them at home. When I say “we” of course I mean the boyfriend coming up with the idea of me doing it at home πŸ™‚ So after some research and a quick supermarket run we created the perfect home-baked hot dogs, that are like 300 times better that those of the nearby bakery. Sorry guys, we won”t be buying any more of your hot dogs!

For the dough (same as that of the Milky Bread Swirls)

500 g flour
50 g butter
200 ml water
100 ml milk
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp sugar
1 pack instant yeast
1 egg

sausages of your liking, I used a tad bit spicy pork sausages (I made 4 hot dogs and a couple of bread swirls, you can also use all the dough to make about 8 hot dogs)

+1 egg for brushing

A. Mix the water, sugar and yeast. Wait for the yeast to rise (around 15-20 minutes should do)
B. Mix the soft butter, egg and salt
C. Mix A. and B., add the flour and milk, and bring it together to form a nice smooth dough
D. Let the dough rise in a warm place (1/2-1h, depending on time at hand:))
E. Flat out the dough to a square (around 1cm or 0.4 inch thick), cut strings (2-3cm or around 1 inch wide), and wrap them tightly around the sausages and tuck in the ends. Brush with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame or linseeds, and bake them while golden brown at 190Β°C/370Β°F.

This reminds me of pigs in a blanket my mom made when we were kids. I love that you made the dough from scratch. Looks tasty!

    • Its worth it because it is really an easy dough πŸ™‚ My mom never made any dough by hand (or pigs in a blanket…) haha! Thank you πŸ™‚

I will give this a try. You also presented it beautifully. Wrapping the “dogs” that way is so pretty! LOL.

      • I have to admit the wrapping is “copied” from another bakery here in Budapest, they wrapped their hotdogs the same way there, although in a pretzel-like dough. Hope you will like it just as much as we do : ))

As a hot dog aficionado, I say “Brava!” These look far better than any I’ve seen pre-made and I bet they taste 10 times better, too.

  3. Great recipe! Maybe I’ll use it for my son’s birthday this weekend. People are going to love these! Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

  4. Beautiful – you had me guessing there for a minute as to where the hot dog was. It seems with our schedule lately that most of our “dinners” have been hot dogs but these would surely beat what we’ve been eating.

  5. They look yummy all right. But as they say the taste of the pudding lies in the eating…..

Since your stuff is so much better than the local bakery, have you considered supplying to them?
